Local names and events are among Murray River Council’s Australia Day Award recipients.
Moama’s Geoffrey and Alexandra Kent have been honoured as Murray River Council’s joint Citizens of the Year in its Australia Day awards.

The couple joins two other local winners, with Echuca-Moama Athletics president Kate Downward crowned Sportsperson of the Year, and Winter Blues Festival Inc taking home Community Event of the Year.
Other winners included Mila Gray of Moulamein for Young Sportsperson of the Year, Caldwell Hall Management Committee for the Arts and Culture Award, and Goodnight Recreation Reserve and Hall Committee for Community Group of the Year.
Mayor John Harvie congratulated all award recipients and nominees, and recognised their outstanding community contributions.
“On behalf of council, I commend every nominee and congratulate this year’s award recipients, who truly exemplify the positive and lasting impact individuals can have within our communities,” he said.
“These individuals and groups help shape the story of our region, and play a vital role in making Murray River Council such a great place to live.”
Recipients will be formally presented with their awards at local Australia Day breakfasts on Monday, January 26.
Moama’s service has been incorporated into Mathoura, beginning at 7.30am at the Timbercutter on Picnic Point Rd.
Barham’s ceremony includes a speech from Australia Day ambassador and conservationist Brad Farmer, and will be held at Riverside Park from 8am.
Mr Farmer is a renowned conservationist and is known as Australia’s official Beach Ambassador, with more than 40 years experience protecting waterways and the environment.

He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia medal in 2019, and is a best-selling author who has studied beaches nationally for many years.
“Raising the flags of our wonderful country always gives me goosebumps and fills me with pride,” Mr Farmer said.
“Days filled with community cricket or a cold one, laughter through hardships and joy through a sense of inclusivity is what I seek and encourage on our special national day.”
