On Monday, January 19 a stainless steel time capsule, buried a quarter of a century ago, was unearthed, promising a nostalgic journey into the early 2000s.
Standing 1.1 metres tall, the capsule contains everything from Christmas cards and letters to keepsakes from residents and community groups — snapshots of a community frozen in time.
The mastermind behind this remarkable project was Don Polkinghorne, who oversaw every detail from start to finish.
In 2001, Mr Polkinghorne co-ordinated the construction of the capsule, which was fabricated by his grandson at P.F. Engineering, Tatura.
He personally managed the burial, concreting of the top block and hand-lettering of the plaque.
With stainless steel chosen for its durability, the capsule was designed to safely rest underground for 25 years — a milestone it has now triumphantly reached.
Inside the capsule are an estimated 62 entries and envelopes, each telling a story of Murchison life and community spirit in the early 2000s.
Mr Polkinghorne notes that stainless steel not only ensured longevity but could also be reused, and the entire project was completed at a modest cost of $250 — proof that creating a legacy doesn’t require a fortune.
Though the capsule has been dug up, contributors and the public will have to wait a little longer to access its contents.
The official reveal is scheduled for Australia Day, at the Murchison Swimming Pool.
Following the ceremony, the capsule will eventually be reburied at Meteorite Park, preserving its treasures for future generations.
The Australia Day celebrations promise more than just a peek into the past.
Festivities will kick off early, with gates opening at 7.45am and a free breakfast at 8am, followed by the ceremony at 9am.
Highlights include the time capsule reveal at 10am, duck races at 10.15am and a public swim and slide at 10.45am.
The day will also have traditional formalities, such as the flag-raising and the announcement of award winners for Murchison citizen of the year, junior sportsperson, community event of the year, and a school writing competition.
Community members gathered to watch the capsule be brought back to life.
