With 300 to 400 people expected to create a sea of pink and teal around Victoria Park Lake this Sunday, May 11, it’s certainly not too late to plan your outfit and get among the fun.
Raising awareness and funds for breast and ovarian cancer research, the Mother’s Day Classic has grown from a simple walk in the park to an iconic event on the Australian calendar.
Today, it’s known as Australia’s biggest fun run and walk, and has raised over $47.3 million.
Mother’s Day Classic, Shepparton event co-ordinator Kathy Fuller said it was an event that was truly special and meaningful for so many people.
“On the day, you see so many families, friends and those impacted directly all coming together to support each other — some walking, some running, some paddling,” she said.
“The atmosphere is full of so much love, hope and a sense of togetherness.”
A key part of the Shepparton event every year is the guest speaker.
Whether it’s someone brave enough to open up about their personal experiences or a health professional to offer guidance and knowledge, Mrs Fuller said they were always warmly welcomed.
This year, she was thrilled to announce that they had managed to score Kylie Jones not only as the event speaker but also as the event’s ambassador.
“Kylie is a three-time breast cancer survivor, an endurance athlete and runs to support young women affected by breast cancer after being diagnosed herself at just 32 years of age,” Mrs Fuller said.
“She is now a 50-year-old mother with twin boys, who is also lacing up to run the Gold Coast marathon in July — and her boys are going to tackle their first marathon beside her. What an inspiration.”
Julie Keilor from the Shepparton Canoe Club will also provide the opportunity for people to paddle up and down the lake for 8km.
Shepparton is the only place that has the “paddle walkers” aspect to the event.
Whether you walk, run, paddle or cheer from the sidelines, your presence makes a difference.
“Every step you take helps raise awareness and vital funds for breast and ovarian cancer research,” she said.
“It’s a beautiful way to honour those we’ve lost, support those currently going through treatment, and walk in hope together.
“Plus, it’s a great way to kick off Mother’s Day — being active outdoors and connected with our community.”
