Boutique florist Hydie Blooms opened its doors in Mooroopna last week, one of a dozen new businesses to launch in Greater Shepparton in the past few months.
“I decided it was time (to start the business) and flowers are a beautiful thing in the current climate when people can’t see each other, they are a great way to connect,” Ms Kiss said.
“I’ve been in the industry for a few years now and it was time for me to branch out.”
Ms Kiss also has a background in graphic design and several small businesses behind her.
The decision to take on a standalone business in a shopfront on busy McLennan St is not without risk, but like every small business owner before her, she is prepared to back herself.
“I have always been a creative and artistic person and I have learnt that floristry is a really good outlet, I like the customer service side of things, and the retail side, but I also get to be creative.”
“Flowers just make people happy, who doesn’t love flowers?”
A Mooroopna local, Ms Kiss said she had great support from other businesses and the community.
“The support from the locals is amazing,” she said.
Greater Shepparton City Council also provided assistance with $3500 through the New Business Grant program.
“Every little bit counts, it was a matching grant that helped with the renovations, it was a really great help,” Ms Kiss said.
“It is also nice to have the support of council.”
Hydie Blooms is also supporting other local small businesses, including potter Kaye Poulton and Humble Harvest soaps.
Ms Kiss said she considered the possibility of the business not being successful before starting her venture, but decided it was better dive in.
“I think what the worst thing is that can happen, and if it’s not that bad then give it a go. I would rather do that than look back regretting that I didn’t have a go at it,” she said.
