Moira Shire residents can have their say about the future of dog off-leash areas in the shire’s towns.

Council is exploring ways to make the shire more dog friendly and a draft Dog Off-Leash Area Policy is out for public feedback.

Mayor Libro Mustica said dogs could currently be exercised off-leash in daylight hours at showgrounds, football grounds and recreation reserves across the shire.

“Dogs must be in the presence of the owner and the off-leash provisions do not apply when an organised sporting event or similar activity is in progress,” Cr Mustica said.

“During these events dogs must on a leash at all times.”

Cr Mustica said in addition to these open areas, council had received a number of requests to provide confined off-leash areas for dogs.

“These would been in the form of a fenced off-leash dog park,” he said.

“We conducted an initial survey in late 2021 to test the broad community attitude to these assets and to assist in the development of a draft policy.

“This survey had a terrific response with 329 people taking the time to answer the questions.

“Their responses helped guide and develop the draft Off-Leash Dog Area Policy.”

Cr Mustica said this draft policy would help guide the development of off-leash areas throughout Moira Shire.

Submissions can be made on council’s website at moira@vic.gov.au, by mail to PO Box 578, Cobram, 3643, or email info@moira.vic.gov.au.
