In windy conditions, Mark took part in the journey for his third time.
Covering the 415km in distance from Yarrawonga to Koondrook from Monday to Friday last week, Mark did it all to raise money for Tocumwal Can Assist.
Catching up with the Southern Riverina News after a weekend of rest, he said it was challenging but enjoyable.
“The first day was particularly windy; we had strong north-westerly winds, which created two-foot waves.
“The river was pretty high for this time of the year and there was a lot of water in the river, which was good.
“Numbers were also increased from last year. It was good to be a part of it, it’s an awesome experience.
“It was also great to see the indigenous kids with parents and mentors.
“It is the best classroom, getting them away from phones and into nature.”
Mark said this year's fundraising efforts for Tocumwal Can Assist saw an increase from last year’s tally.
“We raised $4,500 this year. I think it was about $3400 last year, so we were up about $1000 from then.”
“It helps with treatment and money to put towards food, telephone bills or fuel to get to medical appointments.
“A lot of people don’t have the finances to deal with cancer.”
Mark’s desire to raise money for Can Assist is personal, and he paddles in memory of his father.
“I have lots of people to thank, including the Tocumwal Can Assist team.
“Local businesses around town have also been great and incredibly supportive.
“Thanks to everyone who contributed, donated, sponsored, helped and connected with us.
“It’s not possible without these people backing you, which gives you incentive to move forward and complete the job.
“Thanks to Shannon and crew from Sydney Harbour Kayaks who continue to make this event happen.
“And a big thanks and heads up from my super coach Mum (Margaret) and my mentor Jim Piner who were ‘oarsome’ to have around.
“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer whether it’s a brother, sister, friend, father, mother, uncle or wife, the list goes on.
“I’m just glad to keep doing the best we can to help people get through the tough times.”
