The opening weekend of the Berrigan Amateur Dramatic Society (BADS) performance of The Wizard of Oz transported three sold out audiences to a magical land.
Directed by Helen Dickie, the show celebrates the extraordinary talent within the local community, bringing Dorothy, Toto and their unforgettable friends to life in a colourful musical adventure filled with heart, humour and timeless songs.
BADS president Riley Nolen said the response to the first three shows had been “phenomenal”.
And he said the next two are “pretty much sold out”.
“We’ve even extended seating to allow more people in; it’s one you won’t want to miss.
“The talent in our group is unreal, and there’s been so much hard work behind the scenes.”
The cast, whose ages range from seven to 60, has spent the past nine months rehearsing.
Mr Nolen praised the dedication of everyone involved.
“Helen picked The Wizard of Oz because of the amazing talent we have here.
“It’s a show that lets everyone shine.”
The production also takes advantage of a $15,000 lighting upgrade at the hall, which will also benefit other users of the facility in the future.
“It’s a professional, quality production,” Mr Nolen said.
“Being able to give back to the community through something of this scale is really special.”
Mrs Dickie said audiences have responded warmly across the opening weekend, describing the reaction as “marvellous”.
She said the upgraded lighting system has been “absolutely wonderful”, particularly for a production with so many scene changes.
After 62 years of directing, Mrs Dickie said this cast is “extremely strong”, noting the rare balance of male performers.
“It’s one of the best I’ve put on,” she said.
“The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favourites, and this will be my final job as director.”
This Friday and Saturday night are your final chances to see this amazing production. Both shows start at 7pm.
Tickets are $45, including entry, supper and automatic entry into the lucky door prize, while children aged 15 and under can attend for $20.
