With football finals in full swing, local students participated in a series of football clinics in Congupna on Friday.

Around 250 Prep to Year 6 students from Congupna Primary School, Tallygaroopna Primary School, Wunghnu, Katamatite and Katandra West gathered for the event, many of them dressed in the colours of their favourite AFL team.
Prep to Year 2 students participated in Auskick clinics, with lots of games designed to build team skills. Meanwhile, older students participated in Superkick, a modified version of Australian rules football designed to encourage them to interact with each other.
Congupna Primary School principal Adam Cleary said the event was designed to bring students from smaller schools together to socialise and make friends.
“Sometimes we feel like our own little island,” he said.
“It’s nice to be able to give opportunities to our students that students at bigger schools get.”
This is particularly beneficial for older students preparing to transition to secondary school.
Mr Cleary said with the event now in its 10th year, he was encouraged by the support received from other local schools.

The event was facilitated by staff from AFL Goulburn Murray. They were assisted in officiating and coaching by Year 11 and 12 students from Shepparton’s SEDA College, which is geared towards those interested in sport and recreation.
SEDA College teacher Katie Heard said the event provided a great opportunity for her students.
“It’s life-ready learning in the sport and recreation industry,” she said.
