The annual event highlights ongoing discrimination still faced by LGBTIQA+ communities, while celebrating progress, resilience and pride.
IDAHOBIT @ Twilight, traditionally observed on May 17, will feature live performances, rainbow storytime, creative activities, market stalls, face painting and guest speakers.
Uniting Vic.Tas Diversity Project Program staff member Georgina Poort said the event was a celebration and call to action, reflecting Uniting’s core values and the work undertaken at both an organisational and local level in Shepparton.
“IDAHOBIT is a time when we invite our entire community to come together, including our allies, to reflect on the ways in which we champion LGBTIQA+ voices, listen deeply and acknowledge the strength of our community,” she said.
“It’s a significant day in the calendar because it acknowledges the steps we have taken since 1990, while also acknowledging the challenges we still face.”
Local creatives and young people will play a central role in this year’s event.
Artist and stallholder Tone highlighted the event’s importance for the community.
“IDAHOBIT is a celebration of how much our community has survived in the face of discrimination, and an opportunity to sit together in the discomfort of how much work still needs to be done,” they said.
“Seeing the opportunity for our community and allies to come together and celebrate creativity, community, connection and queerness is what is going to keep us fuelled in the ongoing journey of advocacy.”
Artist Britty B said they were “super jazzed” to not only share their art, but also see others.
“What’s so exciting about this event is that it gives local queer artists and creatives the platform to share their work in a safe space, and it gives opportunities for folks to engage in community in a really genuine and meaningful way,” they said.
Goulburn Valley Libraries chief executive Felicity Macchion said Shepparton Library was proud to host.
“Supporting this event at the Shepparton Library aligns with our core values of inclusivity and diversity,” Ms Macchion said.
“We aim to create a welcoming space for everyone in our community.
“By celebrating IDAHOBIT Day, we promote awareness, respect and understanding — fostering an environment where everyone feels safe and valued.”
The event will run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Friday, May 16 at the Shepparton Library, 41-43 Marungi St, Shepparton.
