Its long-standing monthly old-time dance, has seen a committed group of dancers turn up to do the foxtrot and gypsy tap to live music over the years.
Sadly, its December dance will be its last.
A hall committee spokesperson said ageing participants, travel distance and fewer live musicians had taken a toll on interest and numbers.
So a decision has been made to end the tradition.
One potential casualty of this decision could be the Lima South Hall, which has relied on income from the dances to fund its annual costs, typically about $2000 per year.
“The Lima South Hall, your hall, has been an integral part of the rural township since it was built with voluntary labour back in the 1950s,” the spokesperson said.
“Even before that, the first hall did a similar job for the first half of the 20th century.
“It has a rich history of meeting the social needs of successive generations of residents.
“Community dances, card nights, catered dinners, table tennis, wedding receptions, birthdays, yoga, rhythm dance and funerals have all found a place under its roof.”
So, what is next for the hall?
The committee of management runs the Victorian Government asset on behalf of the responsible department, currently the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.
“It does so to meet the cultural and social needs of the Lima South community,” the spokesperson said.
“Now we need to find a new direction and purpose for the hall.
“One that can generate sufficient funds to meet the recurrent running costs (including) public liability and insurance, power (and) essential maintenance.
“A new direction that also engages the current Lima South community socially, physically and recreationally.
“As co-owners of the LS hall, we all pay taxes. If you feel the time is right for you to take up some of the voluntary work and initiatives needed to strengthen our community in Lima South then now is your chance.
“Join with the hall committee and forge that future. We would love to see you, your family and neighbours sharing this, our, hall, our assets.”
