The Shepparton-born, Melbourne-based LGBTQIA+ pop artist and designer has released Janelle, a dark, emotionally charged single drawn directly from a real-life moral crossroads.
The track, which dropped on January 9, is part of Kirrilee’s self-written second EP, currently rolling out.
Janelle was written as an open letter to a man who attempted to cheat on his fiancée with Kirrilee.
She refused and urged him to tell the truth.
He said he would, but he lied to her instead.
They’re now married.
Rather than leaning into jealousy or heartbreak, Kirrilee said the song is about accountability.
“Janelle isn’t a song about revenge,” she said.
“It’s about telling the truth when silence protects the wrong person.”
Sonically, Janelle blends dark, atmospheric pop with simmering tension, opening with moody synths before a deliberate beat drop introduces Kirrilee’s restrained yet confrontational vocal delivery.
The cover art is just as personal, with Kirrilee painting it herself after the concept jolted her awake in the middle of the night.
If this is what inspiration brings after dark, her next move in the spotlight is one to watch.
