Aimed at increasing female participation in the sector, the program is a national initiative delivered in partnership with WomenCAN Australia, Wodonga TAFE, Volvo Trucks Australia and Transport Women Australia Limited.
Iron Women is designed to support women entering transport and logistics careers through a combination of training, mentoring and industry exposure.
Participants toured FOOTT’s fleet and processing facility and took part in a panel discussion with staff about career pathways, workplace expectations and entry points in the industry.
FOOTT chief executive Andrew Yeoland said the program provided practical exposure for participants considering operational roles.
“It was good to have the group on site and give them a look at how the operation runs,” Mr Yeoland said.
“Our industry is always looking for capable people, and programs like this help give participants a better understanding of the work before they step into it.”
One of the participants, Kellie Crosier, said the experience changed her perspective on the sector.
“A female driver from FOOTT shared her pathway that highlighted the huge variety of roles available in the transport sector,” she said.
The current Iron Women cohort will continue training over the coming weeks, including practical driver instruction and licence assessment, before completing the program.
