Battered by storms as well as the Murray Bombers, the Tigers fought hard during the Goulburn Valley League fixture at Victoria Park, but eventually succumbed to a 41-point defeat when the mud settled.
It was a 10-minute period just after the match resumed following a break for lightning in the second quarter that swung the momentum irreversibly in the home side’s favour though, with Echuca slamming home four goals to assert its ascendancy.
‘‘It was just one of those days I guess,’’ Rochester coach James Flaherty said.
‘‘It was hard to get much out of it, but both sides had to play in it.
‘‘Those couple of quick goals after the break got us down a bit.
‘‘I think they wanted it a bit more in the end.’’
The Tigers ran into more injury trouble during the contest, with Isaiah Miller suffering a suspected quad strain.
Lively Andy Henderson also came from the field sore in the latter stages of the game, but returned and is expected to be right to go next week.
James Gledhill stood tall for the Tigers in defence all game on Echuca’s Angus Byrne, while the likes of Flaherty, Daniel Hill, Nathan Marrone, Matt Kellett, Jackson McEwen and Hamish Hooppell also battled hard.
The Tigers still find themselves in the top six, despite the loss, and face a crucial clash against Euroa on Saturday.
