G-MW issues blue-green algae update

Not going away: Blue-green algae in Lake Nillahcootie.

Goulburn-Murray Water has lifted blue-green algae warnings for the Broken River and Broken Creek, following a notable reduction in algae levels.

The first warning was issued on February 2 for the Broken River Basin, including Lake Nillahcootie and downstream areas to Casey’s Weir.

The situation escalated on February 13 when the warnings expanded to encompass the Broken River up to Shepparton and the Broken Creek from Casey’s Weir to Katamatite.

These warnings have now been retracted.

The warning remains in effect for Lake Nillahcootie.

G-MW water quality co-ordinator Bianca Atley reassured the public that the organisation would keep testing the water.

“We will continue undertaking water quality monitoring, and if blue-green algae reach levels deemed unsafe by national health guidelines, a warning will be issued,” she said.

G-MW also reminded its customers that water supplied by the organisation was not suitable to drink without proper treatment.
