Cancer Council Victoria’s Cancer Wellness and Exercise workshops provide people who have completed cancer treatment with one-hour group fitness sessions delivered by experienced exercise specialists, followed by a short education session each week.
On average, 495 people in Greater Shepparton are diagnosed with cancer each year.
The workshops will take place at Goulburn Valley Health and may cover topics including cancer survivorship, managing fatigue, healthy eating and nutrition, physical activity, and emotions and wellbeing.
Carers and family members are also able to attend some sessions.
Cancer Council Victoria education and training program lead Tracie Julian said the program played an important role in supporting people as they recovered from treatment.
“We regularly hear from people affected by cancer that returning to everyday life after treatment can be incredibly challenging,” Ms Julian said.
“Adjusting to a new normal often takes time and can be both physically and emotionally demanding, which is why ongoing support is so important.”
Ms Julian said research showed exercise-based rehabilitation programs could help cancer survivors manage pain, reduce fatigue and improve their overall quality of life.
A previous participant said the program had a practical impact on their recovery.
“It showed me concrete things I can do to help myself,” they said.
“I’m grateful to have these kinds of programs for patients.”
Participants must register to attend.
