As Christmas approaches and pandemic restrictions ease, a new book, Greater Shepparton Food Bowl at the Source of it All was launched this week at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre.
The 90-page colour book features a history of the region together with stories of local growers, food businesses, chefs, cafés and restaurants. There are also 14 recipes from local food businesses and chefs for people to try at home.
An appendix also lists Shepparton pubs and bakeries.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said the book’s purpose was to encourage locals, and people across Australia and the world, to try Shepparton produce and celebrate the huge variety of food that has shaped the region.
“With 25 per cent of Victoria’s agricultural production occurring in Greater Shepparton we want to remind people where a lot of their food comes from — right here in their backyard,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

General manager of Bunbartha’s Seeka Australia kiwifruit and nashi pear growing operation Jonathan Van Popering said he believed the book’s diverse content would be a surprise to many people.
“I think it will open many people’s eyes. People don’t know the huge variety of food we grow around here,” he said.
Angie Mangiameli, owner of The Woolshed function centre at Emerald Bank, said the book was “fantastic”.
“It gives the history of our businesses and growers and the photography is excellent,” she said.
Fryers St Food Store owner Ingrid Thomas welcomed the book as a sign of a new beginning following a tough two years.
“We’re on the cusp of a big re-brand for the area, and this creates a fantastic opportunity to build on,” she said.
