Artist Judith Bourchier from Melbourne and StrathmertonMy first job was in merchandising as a sales assistant at Sportsgirl’s flagship store in Collins St, Melbourne. This was an advertised casual holiday position that was displayed in the store's front window for Christmas trading. At this time I was studying to be a secondary teacher and the holiday position was at the completion of my final fourth year. This holiday job was in high-end retail and it was exciting as it reflected the goals and values in my teaching course for the Higher Diploma of Teaching (Art and Craft). Later I upgraded to a Bachelor of Education at the University of Melbourne. The similar themes between the retail job and teaching were pattern-making and sizing, client interaction, accounting, colour theory, window dressing and store design and quality concepts. As I have a keen interest in fashion I applied for this sales position and was a successful applicant at the interview. For my interview I wore my trendiest outfit of a braid trim corduroy pinafore and a midi length coat I had designed and made in needlecraft studies. It was indeed exciting to work in such a visually exciting store with floating flooring and open-design stairways.
