He and his wife developed a 600-cow dairy farm on 580ha in the Finley district. He is negotiating a business change which will allow him more time for off-farm work.
Mr Holm is currently the chair of the NFF Water Committee, a position he believes has given him the experience to put him in good stead to bring together the disparate interests of members in the national body.
“The last 20 years has been particularly challenging in farming,” Mr Holm said. For a large part of that time he has been chair of NSW Farmers Dairy Committee.
Water issues have dominated the agro-political landscape during that time.
“My time as chair of the water committee I got to know a lot of members,” he said.
“I think during that time I have been able to bring people together and sort issues out.”
He believes he has a good idea of what farmer members are looking for.
He said the NFF has been working with governments and presenting alternatives to the blunt instrument of water buybacks.
The NFF was also pushing for an alternative to the superannuation tax which could rope in farmers whose super is invested in farm assets to pay the tax. The NFF sees this as as taxing unrealised gains.
Mr Holm is a former chair of Murray Dairy (from 2012 to 2015).
The NFF election is conducted online for NFF members and the results will be announced at the NFF ‘s annual meeting on October 20.
