Together they have made more than 3000 donations in 2023, helping to save the lives of up to 9000 people in hospital needing blood.
Lifeblood spokesperson Shae Burns said National Volunteer Week recognised and promoted the tireless work of volunteering across Australia.
“When we think of volunteering, we often think of donating our time for our community, but donating blood or plasma is also a selfless and voluntary act,” Ms Burns said.
“We are so grateful volunteer donors roll up their sleeves and give at the Shepparton Donor Centre every day, and we have been thrilled to welcome 93 new donors this year so far.
“Every donation can save three up to three lives — and there’s no better gift than the gift of life.”
The theme of National Volunteer Week 2023 is ‘Change makers’, celebrating the power to drive change through volunteering.
By setting aside about one hour for a donation, blood and plasma donors can make a significant difference to lives.
Ms Burns said some plasma donors gave up to 26 donations a year, which took considerable dedication and was an extraordinary gift to the community.
“Plasma-derived medicines are used to treat more than 50 serious medical conditions, and with demand continuing to grow, plasma now accounts for more than half of all donations needed in Australia,” Ms Burns said.
“We’re currently in need of more plasma donors and hope to inspire more donors to step forward and give plasma donation a go.
“Even if you are only able to donate two or three times a year, it all counts.”
There are 100 appointments available this week at the Shepparton Donor Centre.
