Weedkillers, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics and cooking oil are all common household products that require proper disposal to prevent damage to the environment and wildlife.
Greater Shepparton City Council, in collaboration with Sustainability Victoria, aims to assist residents in disposing of unwanted household chemicals through the return of the Detox Your Home event on Saturday, May 4.
A free and convenient drive-through service will be available on the day at the Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre on Wanganui Rd, Shepparton, from 11am to 2pm.
“Pouring household chemicals down the drain or placing them in the bin pollutes our waterways, harms animals and vegetation, contaminates our water supply and makes rivers unsafe,” council director infrastructure Gary Randhawa said.
“Detox Your Home events are the perfect opportunity to dispose of any unwanted chemicals which residents have around their homes. I encourage people to get involved and bring their items to the Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre.”
Each event gathers about four tonnes of dangerous chemicals, preventing them from reaching landfills and contaminating waterways.
Common chemicals collected at past events include:
- Fuels and flammable liquids — turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners.
- Garden — herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, pool chemicals, poisons.
- Household — cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers.
- Car — wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid.
After collection, chemicals are identified and sorted by expert chemists before being transported to a licensed facility in Melbourne, where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.
Registrations for the event are essential and can be made at: https://detoxshepparton2024.eventbrite.com.au
