Berrigan Rural Fire Service firefighters last week assisted with a grass fire which got into nearby trees at Rennie, during which a district firefighter was injured.

Federation Zone group captain Greyd’n Davis said the call came through around 9.30am.

Due to the burning trees, heavy plant operators were called in for support.

While one tree was being cut to facilitate firefighting efforts, it swung as it fell and caused another two trees to fall.

The third hit a Southern Border region firefighter, who was airlifted to Melbourne for treatment.

“Fellow firefighters provided immediate first aid until the ambulance arrived,” an RFS statement said.

“The member was transported to Albury and later airlifted to Melbourne overnight.”

The firefighter has since been released from hospital and a WorkCover investigation has been completed, with results to be provided to the RFS soon.
