The Murray Valley Orchid Club invites the community to its Annual Orchid Show on Saturday, October 18, 8:30 am–4 pm and Sunday, October 19, 8 am–2 pm at the Lions Pavilion, Yarrawonga Showgrounds, Cnr Gilmore & Dunlop Streets.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for locals to see just how many orchids can thrive here,” says Vice President Phil Nenham. “And it’s not just about looking – people can take plants home and enjoy growing them themselves.”
Orchids are surprisingly easy to grow with the right sunlight, water, and fertiliser.
Popular orchids include Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Cymbidium, and Paphiopedilum, many with hundreds or thousands of locally bred hybrids.
“Watching these plants grow and bloom is so rewarding – it’s a real joy to share that with the community,” Phil adds. “Orchids will be flowering beautifully for display and on sale, making the show a treat for every plant lover.”
Phil’s own passion began when he received his mother’s orchids.
“I started repotting them, and when little pieces broke off, I potted those too. Watching them take root really inspired me,” he says. “That’s what led me to join the club – I wanted to learn more and share what I’ve discovered.”
The club is known for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, with members ranging from beginners to experienced growers eager to share their knowledge.
Meetings include tea and coffee breaks, offering time for relaxed chat and tips.
The Murray Valley Orchid Club Inc meets on the third Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM at the Senior Citizens Hall, Hovell Street, Yarrawonga.
“New members are always warmly welcomed,” Phil says, “and there’s nothing better than connecting with fellow orchid enthusiasts.”
