As part of the Shepparton Festival, Awaken Dance Theatre Company is entering into its fifth season with a contemporary dance performance.
BLOOM promises to delight all the senses, with a fusion of food and dance adorned by visual arts of lighting and projections to bring it all to life.
Awaken Dance Theatre Company director Kyla McGregor said the show was the first of its kind for the group.
“We’re incorporating indoor and outdoor experiences — the performance itself will be immersive in that the audience will be around rather than positioned at the front,” she said.
“It’s just such a unique show, we’ve got some kids that have been with us since the company began so it’s amazing to see that community still thriving.”
Rehearsal: The indoor and outdoor dance piece will take place at The Woolshed.
Being a not-for-profit — the theatre company is entirely volunteer-run — it relies on fundraising efforts and sponsorship from local businesses to keep giving local students opportunities and a haven of sorts.
Ms McGregor said her vision for the company was with her for 20 years before conception in 2018.
“As a school teacher, I could see some really amazing students and I just wanted them to be able to develop further, give them an opportunity they wouldn’t get regionally,” she said.
“My heart was to bring something that a lot of city kids would just get and bring it to life here.”
The Australian Ballet Company reached out to collaborate for this year’s performance, offering mentorship to the students.
What came of it is the original contemporary dance work BLOOM, which explores the concept of rising up to reach one’s full potential, using the environment and nature as a metaphor.
The performance features a three-course meal, beginning with canapés on the deck overlooking the lake as the first act of the performance begins.
That is followed by indoor seating for the main course and dessert, along with the second and third acts of the performance, finishing with tea and coffee.
BLOOM will debut over two nights, Wednesday, March 30, and Thursday, March 31, at The Woolshed, Emerald Bank.
