Azem, founder of the People Supporting People charity, has been a long-time advocate for those in need across the Goulburn Valley.
Recently, his support centre, located behind Lutfiye’s Shish Kebab restaurant, was vandalised, with toilets and bathroom facilities damaged.
The incident was reported in The News, and Azem’s gracious response, choosing forgiveness over anger, struck a chord with Berry Street students.
Inspired by his resilience and generosity, the students decided to take action.
Using funds raised through their small business, Berry Sweets, they donated $400 to support Azem’s ongoing work.
Berry Sweets sells chocolates in local stores and has also hosted community barbecues to raise money.
The students’ donation will go towards projects or upgrades at Azem’s centre, including enhanced security.
Teacher Stewart Shaw praised the students’ efforts and the growing partnership with People Supporting People.
“It’s a really good opportunity for our kids,” Mr Shaw said.
“Many of them volunteer with Azem, help out at his barbecues.
“This isn’t the first time Berry Street has supported his work.”
Azem said he was moved by the gesture.
“They’re really good kids, and I have great respect for them,” he said.
“It was so lovely that they had taken their own time and money to make that donation.”
Azem confirmed the bathroom had since been repaired, but said the donation would help improve security and protect the facility.
