They flew to Queensland last week to catch up with one of their sons, Angus, currently playing with Broadbeach and Southport football sides on the Gold Coast.
Angus was a member of last year’s Kyabram premiership side.
They had barely arrived when they were informed by another of their footballing sons, Isaiah, back home in Kyabram, that he had been selected to make his debut for Kyabram’s senior side against Euroa at Kyabram on Saturday.
That was a clash with the Broadbeach game, so the Scobles decided to get back to Kyabram and watch Isaiah’s debut.
‘‘We had to support Isaiah as he was playing his first senior game, but we got a day in with Angus before catching a flight back to Melbourne on Saturday morning,’’ Jess said.
The Scobles were naturally proud of Isaish’s impressive debut, which helped the Bombers score a percentage-boosting win over Euroa.
Big names signed
The Deni Ute Muster has got big names on the dotted line to appear at this year’s version of the iconic event.
American country music star Tyler Braden and Aussie sensation Tones And I will join Australia’s own Lee Kernaghan and Canadian Ethan Miller among the headline acts for the muster on October 2 and 3.
The muster was a sell-out last year and organisers are encouraging music lovers to get in quickly, as early bird tickets have all been sold.
General admission tickets and camping sites are available at deniutemuster.com.au
Welcome rainfall
Welcome rain fell over the district late Saturday into Sunday.
Kyabram weather station recorded 13.2mm, which croppers described as ‘‘ideal”.
But follow-up rains over the next two or three weeks will now be needed for a growth spurt.
Only 15mm was recorded for May, and last weekend’s rain was the first recorded since April 10.
Cooler weather has followed the rain, with Sunday’s maximum just 19°C.
Pool party
More good news for Rochester.
The Victorian Government has committed $3.95 million to the redevelopment of the town’s swimming pool.
Treasurer and state Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes made the announcement on April 24 and praised Campaspe Shire Council for taking time to settle on the project the town wanted and needed.
The pool has been out of action since the 2022 floods, with students sent to Kyabram or Echuca for swimming programs.
Brighter future
The future of the iconic Kirwans Bridge at Nagambie looks a lot brighter.
The bridge, which has been closed to all traffic since the 2022 floods, has had an additional $1 million allocated from Strathbogie Shire Council’s deferred projects and savings for restoration work.
That allocation was necessary to gain a $5 million contribution from the Federal Government for the restoration project.
Water-proofing work
Still on historic bridges.
Seymour’s historic Old Goulburn River Bridge has undergone water-proofing works under Heritage Act requirements.
Last year, Mitchell Shire Council opted to cancel the full restoration of the bridge, but then had a change of heart to maintain the structure in its current condition and meet Heritage Act requirements.
Council allocated $150,000 for the water-proofing works.
Postal service rally
The Coleambally community staged a rally last week, demanding Australia Post reinstate a fully operational licensed post office.
Residents have been raising concerns since Australia Post’s decision to downgrade the town’s licensed post office to a Community Postal Agency in January.
NSW Member for Murray Helen Dalton has taken up the fight and organised the rally.
Hall saved
The Strathallan Hall will continue to serve the local district.
The 97-year-old building was facing extinction after extensive flood damage in 2011 and 2022, but a committee rallied to save the building, and on April 13 the ownership of the hall was handed over to the Strathmerton Community Group.
Fatal collision
A 57-year-old truck driver from Orange was killed in a multi-vehicle crash near Violet Town on Friday, April 17.
Police believe the truck collided with a roadworks truck, veered across a median strip and clipped a car before it rolled and caught fire.
The truck driver died at the scene and the driver of the second truck and car were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Square dinkum
G’day.
I may not have been my mother’s favourite child, but I was the first one she thought of ... when the police came knocking at our door.
Hooroo!
