November 11, 2025, is now etched in the history of Finley High School, not only for the importance of Remembrance Day but also the official unveiling of the new commemorative mural and ANZAC bench.

The mural, which came about as the result of a number of community donations and was painted by Scott Vidler from Wagga Wagga, is an outstanding depiction of a soldier at war and the bench, a place to sit, quietly contemplate and give thanks.
A Veterans Community Grant of $1500 was received for the bench, with the balance subsidised by the Finley RSL Sub-branch.
After Acknowledgement of Country by vice captain Maggie Bramley, principal Jeff Ward addressed the gathering of students and invited members of the community.
“These additions to our school grounds are more than just artworks or furniture - they are lasting tributes to the spirit of service, courage, and sacrifice that define the ANZAC legacy,” he said.
“The mural reflects our ongoing commitment to remembering the past, while the bench offers a place for quiet reflection and remembrance.
“We also take this opportunity to recognise and honour all Finley High School students, past and present, who have gone on to serve in the Australian Defence Force. Your decision to serve our country is deeply respected, and we are immensely proud of your commitment, bravery, and sense of duty.
“You follow in the footsteps of those we remember today, and your service is an important part of our school’s ongoing story.”
The story of how Remembrance Day came about was then given by school captain Bethany Loughridge and students Melanie Omondi and Remi Pyle.
A prayer reading by Bethany took place before TheOde, Last Post, Reveille and the Australian National Anthem brought the service to a close.
The principal, teachers and parents of Finley High School can be very proud of the students at the school.
The manner in which they observed the proceedings with dignity and respect was a credit to all.
Mr Ward expressed his thanks to all those who contributed so generously to the cost of the mural.
They include the Student Representative Council, Berrigan RSL Sub-branch, Finley High School P&C, Berrigan CWA, Finley Rotary Club, Finley Menshed and Finley RSL Sub-branch.
“If I have missed anyone, I apologise sincerely. And if there are any other organisations and members of the community who would like to contribute to the cost of the mural, it would be very much appreciated,” Mr Ward said.
