Behind this project is a group of hard-working knitters — the Yarn Bombers — who work all year to make this Christmas transformation a reality.
Dossie Grills, with her daughter Susie Bennett, was putting up her yarn masterpiece when the Free Press found them in early December.
Dossie said each bomber had a dedicated tree they were responsible for decorating; hers is the one in front of the Kyabram Town Hall Art Gallery.
She said she had been participating in the tradition since the Yarn Bombers began in 2020.
The group began as a heartwarming response to the isolation brought on by COVID-19, when local businesses and families were facing their greatest challenges and needed hope most.
Group co-ordinator Trish Worsfold said their first meeting was at John Pilley Reserve, with the police allowing for 10 of them to meet up outside.
From there, the Yarn Bombers blossomed into a community movement, welcoming home-based contributors and forging partnerships with local organisations.
Five years on, they have become beloved for their stunning decorations that transform Kyabram each December — with every single tree along Allan St adorned with individually crafted, handmade treasures.
The decorations will be on display throughout December.
The project receives support from Bendigo Bank, Campaspe Shire Council, the Kyabram Club, GMCU and the Kyabram Men's Shed.
