Adoption of Moama overland flood report delayed

Murray River Councillors have voted against adopting the final version of the Moama Major Overland Flow Flood Study Report, voting instead for the report to be presented to council in a workshop and for access to public submissions received regarding it.

The original motion to adopt the report was by Cr Dennis Gleeson and seconded by Cr Geoff Wise in July’s meeting.

Neither Cr Gleeson nor Cr Wise supported the planning officer’s recommendation to adopt the report and endorse its use for assessing development while a review of the town’s flood risk management plan took place, instead moving the motion to allow for debate.

Cr Wise said he wanted to ensure all councillors fully understood the implications of the report before supporting it.

“I’m just not quite sure that I’m totally comfortable with it at the minute,” Cr Wise said.

“I’d like to see the submission made regarding the report, but also I think it should go to a workshop... so that we understand it fully.

“There’s an enormous amount of skin in it, too, for people that can end up in a bad place over a few centimetres of water.”

After the motion was defeated, a foreshadowed motion for the report to be presented to council along with the submission received was moved by Cr Gen Cambell and seconded by Cr Gleeson.

That motion passed unanimously, without debate.
