Call it a fixer-upper, a blank canvas, or a diamond in the rough — the Pine Lodge Hotel and Hostel is ready for its next chapter.
What it needs now is a bold new owner with a fresh vision.
When David Cook purchased the Pine Lodge Hotel and Hostel in 2017, it was a modest setup.
He was ready to breathe new life into the establishment and dreamed big about what it could become — ideally bringing it back as a vibrant pub.
Challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the demands of farming put his big restoration plans on hold. Over the years, however, he managed to tidy up a few areas around the property.
Then, last December, he made the difficult decision to put the property on the market, realising he no longer had the energy to continue with the renovations.
“You need someone passionate, with energy and vision, to take it on and bring it back to life,” David said.
“It really has unlimited potential.”
Established in the 1870s, the Pine Lodge Hotel was among the earliest establishments in the area, also operating as the local store and post office, making it a central hub for the Pine Lodge community.
According to David’s records, the pub burnt down in the 1920s but was rebuilt almost immediately and has since had several owners.
The owners immediately before David invested significantly in the property, improvements that can still be seen today. It’s now recognised for its potential as a hospitality venue.
“The property features a 40-bed hostel, an outdoor lawn and bar area, and a front bar that has served as a common room for guests,” David said.
“I ran it as accommodation for backpackers for many years to generate income and help get the pub back up and running — even if only a few nights a week to start with.
“I didn’t quite get there, but I’m really hoping the right people who see its potential can.”
That potential includes a liquor licence with a red line plan covering the entire 5100 sq m site, a well-maintained 40-bed hostel ideal for harvest labour or group bookings, and a spacious beer garden and outdoor bar.
Add to that a character-filled front and lounge bar, an excellent kitchen setup, and a well-presented amenities block — all key ingredients for a thriving country hospitality destination.
“It’s got all the bones,” David said.
“It wouldn’t have to stay as backpacker accommodation; it could be a bed and breakfast, would be at the lower level given the outside toilet block, but there is huge potential for a wedding or function space, or a stopover spot for travellers.
“Gosh, there’s even enough room to build shops out here and turn it into not just a pub with accommodation, but a thriving community hub — for locals, passers-by, or visitors from Melbourne.
“Depending on the buyer’s vision and cash flow, it has untapped potential. I’m excited to see what happens to it.”
