Bill Chisholm and deputy Fiona Stevens will lead the council after being unanimously voted in at a council meeting on November 15.
Cr Chisholm is returning to the top job for a 12-month term after serving in 2018-19, replacing Rhonda Sanderson as mayor.
Cr Chisholm is a farmer from the Tooborac area and is heavily involved in the community, advocating for government investment in roads and infrastructure and emergency management.
Cr Chisholm is an advocate for the need to provide local employment opportunities to support growing communities.
“Mitchell has a big year ahead as our community recovers from the impacts of COVID, as we drive our advocacy priorities for the upcoming federal and state elections,” Cr Chisholm said.
Cr Stevens is a Victoria Police veteran of 36 years, and a Broadford local. She is committed to history and heritage, and hopes to attract tourism, which she believes will bring economic benefits and employment opportunities throughout the shire.
StrathbogieShire
Laura Binks was elected as Strathbogie Shire’s new mayor at a council meeting on November 16.
She is joined by Paul Murray who was elected to the role of deputy mayor.
The election took place after Cr Binks received the only nomination to run for mayor by fellow councillor Kristy Hourigan, which was seconded by Sally Hayes-Burke.
Outgoing mayor Chris Raeburn delivered a mayoral report for the past 12 months, and thanked the local community and his colleagues.
“It has been my pleasure and a privilege to serve the community and advocate on behalf of the people across this magnificent region,” he said.
“I wish the next elected mayor every success in the role and my support to assist you fulfil your duty.”
Both Cr Binks and Cr Murray said they were honoured to take on the roles and were looking forward to working with the Strathbogie Shire community over the next 12 months.
Cr Binks said she had “grown and developed” her knowledge of local government since being elected and thanked council staff and her fellow councillors for their assistance in doing so.
Cr Murray said he looked forward to carrying out the council’s Vision and Community Plan and the council’s Climate Change Action Plan.
He said the past 18 months had been a learning curve and that he looked forward to the opportunity to learn and grow further.
Moira Shire
Moira Shire mayor Libro Mustica will hold the top job for a fifth term, a special meeting in Cobram decided on November 10.
No other councillor has served more than two consecutive terms as mayor in the shire. Cr Mustica said he was honoured to be re-elected.
“I am inspired by the commitment of the many citizens who contribute their time to support the work of council,” he said.
“Our past 12 months have been successful in many ways; however, the next 12 months will be even better.”
Peter Lawless was elected deputy mayor for a second term.
Kevin Bourke tendered his resignation at the completion of the mayoral election after almost 10 years on the council.
