Greater Shepparton City Council confirmed contractors commenced at the site this week to begin work on the War Memorial Project.
Set to be completed by Anzac Day this year, stage one of the project will see digi-glass panels installed to cover WWII, Korea and Vietnam, along with a section installed acknowledging nurses and indigenous soldiers.
Council director infrastructure Phil Hoare said the upgrades played an important role in recognising those who fought for our country.
“Currently the Mooroopna War Memorial includes only names of WWI veterans,” he said.
“The contribution of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers, nurses, WWII, Korea and Vietnam soldiers is absent.
“It is important we recognise and honour our families, friends and visitors who have made ultimate sacrifices to serve our nation.”
Stage one of the works will also see a walkway to the existing rotunda installed, irrigation works and three flag poles installed, with a paved area surrounding them.
These works will ensure the site is accessible to all members of the public.
“Currently, the WWI memorial can only be accessed via steps and across grass,” Mr Hoare said.
“The installation of the walkway will make this area accessible for all, which is crucial in allowing everyone to pay their respects.”
Council confirmed designs for stage two of the works will be undertaken this financial year.
