Activities on the day will include sewing and knitting wildlife pouches and nests, making freezable food balls and nest boxes and hollows.
Greater Shepparton City Council environment manager Greg McKenzie said it was a great initiative for the community and would help rehabilitate and treat wildlife that were already injured, as well as create in-demand supplies.
“Nurture Nature will provide members of the community with the opportunity to support and assist with the preservation and recovery of injured wildlife,” Mr McKenzie said.
“Aside from the activities on the day, we will also have local wildlife carers who can chat with participants about the difficulties of treating injured animals in bushfire-affected areas.”
“We are welcoming any donations of old sheets or material (wool or cotton); and we encourage kids to bring along one of their old pillow cases to turn into their very own special gift for an injured animal.”
Partner organisations Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Murray Landcare Network, Shepparton Mooroopna Urban Landcare Group, Goulburn Valley Water, Parks Victoria and the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project will help RiverConnect host the event.
Members of the recently-formed Animal Rescue Craft Group – Goulburn Valley will lead the crafting activities.
Those with a keen interest in knitting, crocheting and sewing are encouraged to join the day and bring their sewing machines and their friends along.
Nurture Nature day will present an opportunity for those with no sewing or knitting experience to learn some skills from experts.
The event, which starts at 9.30 am, is free, and morning tea will be provided.
Please RSVP to RiverConnect Education Officer Allison on 5832 9493. If you’re unable to attend but would still like to contribute, please contact Allison to see what other activities are being organised.
