As part of International Credit Union Day on October 17, GMCU donated $2.50 to the fund for every transaction across its 10 branches.
The handover was made official on Wednesday morning at the hospital.
Nurse unit manager of oncology Linley Smith said the money would be used in the hospital's special purpose fund.
She said it eased the burden for patients.
“It's to aid people along the way while they're having treatment,” Ms Smith said.
“If someone needs to pay for transport to go to Melbourne or something like that we can sort of help with giving money towards that.
“If people aren't working there's that financial strain, so we provide fuel vouchers.
“Sometimes there is a cost for a scan or something like that, so rather than having to pay $400 for a scan we can help with paying for the cost of it.
“It all has an added strain and worry if they have to pay for the costs.”
Ms Smith said there was nothing wrong with patients asking for extra help.
“Some people don't want to admit they're doing it tough; they think it's weak and they don't say anything,” she said.
“With the support nurses that are linked in with breast, bowel and prostate they'll bring it up with the patient.
“For example the nurse will say, ‘You need to go to Bendigo for radiotherapy — here's a fuel voucher.'”
GMCU chief executive Melissa Ralph said part of being a credit union is giving back to the community.
“On International Credit Union Day we had this opportunity to make it really clear that it was our members that are allowing us to make those contributions,” she said.
“Everybody who comes into a branch, let's talk about how we might give back to a local need.
“Members literally contributed by voting with their feet, so everyone who came in the front door made a transaction in our branches.”
