Shyanne-Lee Tatnell, 14, was staying at a youth hostel in Launceston in northern Tasmania when she went missing in April 2023.
Her remains were found almost three months later near a bush track in the state's northeast.
Christopher Mark Jordan, 39, was charged with her murder and pleaded not guilty in January 2024.
Jordan told the Supreme Court of Tasmania on Friday he was obtaining Claire Wong and Greg Barns SC as his new defence team.
Mr Barns has worked on several high-profile matters in Tasmania and on Mr Assange's legal case.
Justice Kate Cuthbertson told Jordan it was very important Ms Wong and Mr Barns "got cracking" on obtaining the required paperwork from his previous lawyer.
A trial, which doesn't yet have a date, could take four-five weeks, the court was told.
The case was adjourned until April 2 to allow for court transcripts to be completed.
It is alleged Jordan murdered Shyanne-Lee on April 30, 2023, in the town of Scottsdale, which is home to a few thousand people.
She was last seen on the night of April 30 in the city of Launceston, about one hour's drive from Scottsdale.
Her disappearance sparked large-scale searches, including an operation involving 180 people.
