BHP worker dies after being hit by train in WA's north

A worker has died after being struck by a train at a BHP rail yard in the West Australian town of Port Hedland.

The incident happened about 9.30pm on Tuesday.

BHP has suspended its WA iron ore operations for 24 hours following the incident and counselling services are being provided.

"All of us at BHP are devastated by this tragic event," iron ore president Brandon Craig said in a statement.

"Of course, that is nothing compared to the grief and loss being felt by the person's family, friends and colleagues.

"Our hearts are with them at this time and we will provide any support that we can."

The mining giant said police had attended the site and safety regulators including the Office of National Rail Safety had been informed.

A full internal investigation would be undertaken, the company added.
