Libraries screening short films

Indigenous library assistant Julie Best will host Story Time in Yarrawonga and lead a collage art activity in Tatura as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Celebrating First Nations culture, stories and language through film, GV Libraries will be screening a showcase of short films called Nunga Screen during NAIDOC Week.

Created by First Nations people, the showcase is suitable for all ages and will be screened at libraries in Mooroopna, Numurkah, Nathalia, Yarrawonga, Cobram, Avenel and Euroa at various times throughout the week.

GV Libraries operations manager Jenny Wyllie said NAIDOC Week was an opportunity to celebrate First Nations cultures and experiences with the whole community.

“By hosting events in libraries throughout the region, more people will be able to experience NAIDOC Week activities,” Jenny said.

Nunga Screen offers the opportunity for the whole community to experience the stories and creativity of First Nations people, while our hands-on children’s activities introduce the younger members of our community to First Nations themes.”

Some of the hands-on children’s activities include Bogong moth art, layered pattern landscapes, collage echidnas and scratch-art boomerangs.

In addition, Indigenous library assistant Julie Best will be hosting Story Time at Yarrawonga and a collage art activity at Tatura.

“Libraries throughout the region will be offering activities that open up opportunities for community members in the area to participate,” she said.

“By offering multi-age activities such as Nunga Screen, it opens things further as families can participate together, learn and discuss.

“We have had very positive feedback over the past few years, with many participants coming along to the library for the first time – which is great to see.

“GV Libraries is consciously trying to make our libraries culturally safe places for First Nations people – and the work of Julie Best has been very helpful in this respect.”
