Through tireless efforts to raise awareness and funding for research into motor neurone disease through the Big Freeze campaign, Australian football legend Neale Daniher has inspired communities across the country, including Moyola Lodge.

Residents, staff and families united at the aged care home’s second annual Big Freeze fundraiser on Tuesday, June 9.
Several staff members dressed up as iconic characters and volunteered to have buckets of icy water tipped over their heads, with residents and visitors watching on.
The community spirit extended beyond staff and residents, with enrolled nurse Jemma Hayward’s niece and nephew also stepping up to take part in the fundraising efforts.
Ms Hayward said their involvement reflected the inclusive nature of the campaign.
“The Big Freeze campaign has no age limit,” she said.
“It brings people of all ages together to support a great cause.”

Moyola Lodge first held a Big Freeze fundraiser in 2025 and is now committed to making it an annual event in support of a cause close to so many hearts.
The aged care facility’s ongoing fundraising is driven through a desire to support those affected by MND and contribute to the search for a cure.
“We did it last year trying to raise money for MND, creating awareness and hopefully one day we’ll get a cure,” Ms Hayward said.
“Most of our residents grew up watching Neale Daniher and then there’s other people in our community that do have it.
“Our residents can strongly relate to the disease.”

The day also benefited from the helping hands of Notre Dame College students, whose fortnightly visit to the lodge to connect with residents coincided with the event.
The involvement of both the residents and students supports the inclusive nature of the event, helping it become a success each year.
“The cause makes us want to do this, and by getting both the residents and students from Notre Dame involved always leads to a successful day,” Ms Hayward said.
The fun yet purposeful event held extra significance this year following the recent passing of Daniher.
“This year’s Big Freeze fundraiser is especially important as we honour Neale’s legacy and continue supporting a cause that means so much to so many people,” she said.
