Chill-out with a winter health check-in

Ambulance Victoria regional operations executive director Danielle North said winter can bring extra health risks, particularly for older people and those living on their own.

“Simple things like a fall in the bathroom or a faulty heater can quickly become serious,” Ms North said.

“Now’s the time to check that your heating is safe, that rugs and cords aren’t trip hazards, and that walkways are clear and well-lit. A few small steps can make a big difference.”

Ms North said vaccination remains one of the most important ways to protect against seasonal illnesses and encouraged Victorians to do their part to ensure Ambulance Victoria’s paramedics and first responders were available for patients most in need.

“There are many options people can access when they need timely medical care and health advice but don’t need an emergency ambulance, including the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department and Urgent Care Clinics,” she said.

“As we head into winter we tend to see a surge in respiratory illnesses like flu and COVID-19. Getting vaccinated is still the best protection — and there’s still time.

“That’s why we urge Victorians to book in their annual flu vaccination, keep regular check-ups with your GP or specialist and stay home if unwell.

“We can all help to protect ourselves and people most at risk in the community.”

Victorians are reminded that for non-urgent health concerns, there are trusted services available instead of calling triple-zero:

“These services are a great first port of call and help save triple-zero for genuine emergencies,” Ms North said.
