On Thursday more than 200 Yea0rs 5 and 6 students donned their formal attire for the yabby races, part of Melbourne Cup celebrations at Bourchier St Primary School, Shepparton.

Year 6 teacher Matthew Mollison said the yabbies were placed in the middle of a circle and the first one to make it to the edge was the winner.
Each class had four yabbies competing in four qualifying heats before the final race for the Bourchier Cup, he said.
“Class 6BF won the cup this year.”
Mr Mollison said all the students dressed up for the occasion with the girls wearing fascinators and boys wearing suits.
The yabby races mark the end of the Spring Racing Carnival and have been running at the school for more than 10 years.
