They will be completed using the funding gifted to Berrigan Shire Council through the Commonwealth Government’s Drought Communities Programme .
Mayor Matt Hannan said four projects submitted by the council have been approved under the program.
He said they will not only benefit the residents of Finley and Berrigan, where the projects are located, but the entire Southern Riverina and visitors to the region.
Selected projects are:
- Replacement of the amenities building at the Finley War Memorial Swimming Pool.
- Construction of Scoullar St, Finley to the south of Finley Hospital and Finley Regional Care.
- Refurbishment of Apex Park, Berrigan.
- Refurbishment of Hayes Parks, Berrigan.
‘‘The redevelopment of Scoullar St will be important road infrastructure once finished,’’ Cr Hannan said.
‘‘It will allow for better access for the hospital.
‘‘The upgrade of the amenities at the pool is extremely important also, as it will have a lot of use over the coming months.
‘‘It will be a place of refuge for many in the area to engage socially, relax and enjoy the summer.
‘‘The two parks we identified for upgrades in Berrigan will hopefully create further economic activity and act as a social destination in the town, in the same way that the splash parks in Barooga and Tocumwal have attracted both visitors and regional residents.’’
Cr Hannan said council chose to specifically concentrate on Berrigan and Finley projects when considering the best use for the money.
He said the projects should also be able to be completed quickly.
‘‘The four projects we applied for were identified in the towns that have been most affected by the drought,’’ he explained.
‘‘We want to get these projects started as soon as possible given their short deadline to have the funding used.’’
Under the agreement, the projects must be completed by June 30, 2020.
