Greater Shepparton Foundation is calling for expressions of interest for the final position in its successful Regional Youth Journalism Fellowship program.
The fellowship offers young people from Greater Shepparton a unique chance to be paid while learning and developing their skills in the Shepparton News newsroom.
Participants also receive support and mentorship from journalists through the Melbourne Press Club, gaining valuable guidance and industry insight.
Past fellow Pip Turton praised the experience, saying it helped build practical skills across many areas of journalism.
“It helps you understand how to do podcasts, interview people, write articles and to learn everything you need to know about the media industry,” Pip said.
Since launching, the fellowship has seen three successful applicants complete the program, with expressions of interest now open for the fourth and final placement, due to begin in July this year.
The opportunity is ideal for local young people considering a career in journalism, media or communications.
The successful applicant will gain hands-on experience, confidence, job application and interview skills, as well as valuable professional connections — all while remaining in their home community.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a cover letter and a sample of their writing for consideration.
Pip urged young people to apply.
“You just email in your cover letter and a piece of your writing — I think you should take this opportunity now as it is the last place in the Regional Youth Journalism Fellowship ever.” she said.
Greater Shepparton Foundation said it had been proud to provide this pathway for young people through partnerships with McPherson Media and the Melbourne Press Club, with financial support from the Brian M Davis Charitable Foundation.
Greater Shepparton Foundation believes in empowering local people to pursue their goals — whether that’s through higher education, vocational training, or other meaningful pathways to study or employment.
Supporting individuals to follow their own aspirations is one of the most impactful ways we can strengthen our community, both now and into the future.
Along with the Regional Youth Journalism Fellowship, Greater Shepparton Foundation also offers several scholarship opportunities, ensuring we’re meeting young people where they are and helping them move forward — on the path that’s right for them.
Further information regarding the fellowship and scholarship opportunities is available on the foundation’s website at www.greatershepparton.foundation or by emailing info@greatershepparton.foundation
Until next time.
