The Parkinson’s workshops offer hope and insight.

Since its establishment in 2018, Parkinson’s Darnley Montgomery Foundation has been committed to supporting people living with Parkinson’s disease.

The foundation was set up in honour of the late Darnley Montgomery, a long-term Parkinson’s sufferer and a dedicated member of the Parkinson’s Victoria Shepparton Peer Support Group.

In keeping Darnley’s legacy alive, the foundation directs community donations towards local projects that improve care and facilities for those with movement disorders.

Now in its fifth series, the foundation’s workshops have become a go-to resource for anyone seeking information and support in managing Parkinson’s.

Past attendees praised the sessions, having been surprised at how much they didn’t know about what was available locally, even after years of living with the condition.

Each of the six weeks covers a different aspect of Parkinson’s, with guest speakers and experts in their fields. The workshops began on September 17 and run every Tuesday from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

Here’s what’s on offer in the remaining three sessions:

October 8: Sheree Ambrosini from Parkinson’s WA explores the role of nutrition and other important factors in managing Parkinson’s.
October 15: Anna Lucchesi, a physiotherapist trained in PD Warrior, shares insights into exercise and physiotherapy — what to do, when and why.
October 22: Melinda Hogeboom, a speech pathologist from Sound Voice Speech Pathology, explains how speech therapy can support those with Parkinson’s.

The sessions have been so successful that people travel from Melbourne, Albury and beyond to attend. For just $20 (carers attend for free), participants can gain invaluable knowledge that helps them better manage their condition and access the right services.
