In Greater Shepparton, 12 per cent of our young people are classified as NEET — not in employment, education, or training *(source: Shepparton Snapshot Report – Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic & Social Research, University of Melbourne).
That statistic should stop us all in our tracks.
It means too many of our young people are being left behind, not because of a lack of ambition, but because of barriers — financial, personal, or systemic — that stand between them and opportunity.
At the Greater Shepparton Foundation, we believe talent is everywhere, especially in our young people.
That’s why we are so proud to announce the launch of our newest initiative, the Employment and Vocational Training Scholarships, in partnership with Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network.
These scholarships are about breaking down the small but significant costs that can prevent a young person from stepping into training, an apprenticeship or meaningful employment.
Scholarships of up to $500 are now available to cover essential expenses such as course fees, tools, uniforms, travel or equipment.
It may not sound like much, but for a motivated young person facing financial strain, this support can be the difference between stalling and stepping forward.
We are calling on young people aged 16 to 25 who are ready to take their next step but need a helping hand to apply.
Applications close October 12 via our website: greatershepparton.foundation
This program is generously supported by Soroptimist International Shepparton and Rotary Shepparton Central — two organisations deeply committed to ensuring our region’s young people thrive.
At the same time, we are excited to open applications for our flagship Lift Off Education Scholarships on Monday, September 15.
Now in its 11th year, Lift Off has supported 150 local students with scholarships worth up to $10,000 over one to three years, helping to remove the financial roadblocks to further education.
Whether it’s university, TAFE, or another pathway, Lift Off continues to transform lives and open doors that might otherwise remain closed.
Both programs are about investing in the future of our region by backing the potential of our young people.
If you are a young person with ambition but facing barriers, I encourage you to apply.

Until next time.
