Unable to wait for Muscat, worried Rangers appoint Rohl

With Australian Kevin Muscat unavailable until late November Glasgow giants Rangers have named former Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl as their new manager.

The German replaces Russell Martin, sacked 15 days ago, and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Rohl left Championship side Wednesday by mutual consent in July, less than two weeks before the start of the season, having been in charge since October 2023. He guided them to a 12th-place finish last season despite financial issues at the club.

The 36-year-old's availability persuaded Rangers to opt for him having decided, after protracted talks, they could not wait for Muscat to complete his commitments in China where he is poised to lead Shanghai Port to the Chinese Super League title.

Rangers drew 2-2 at home to Dundee United on Saturday and are sixth in the standings, 13 points adrift of leaders Hearts and three points clear of bottom place.

Having failed to qualify for the Champions League they have also lost their first two matches in the Europa League.

"I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions," Rohl said in a club statement.

"My staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club."
