Together with his father Alf-Inge, who was also a professional footballer, he bought a 1594 edition of Snorri Sturluson's Kings' Sagas for 1.3 million Norwegian kroner ($A190,000) in December, according to the NTB news agency.
But he did not intend to keep it.
"I was never a big reader," Haaland said in a statement from his home municipality of Time on Tuesday.
He has now handed the book over to the municipality permanently - more specifically to the library in the town of Bryne, where Haaland grew up.
However, the Manchester City striker set one condition.
"I want the book to always be displayed open so that people can read about those who come from my home, from Bryne and Jæren," the municipality quoted Haaland as saying.
It was easier to develop an interest in reading when you could recognize yourself in the people described, he said.
"I am living my dream, but unfortunately that is reserved for only a few. I have seen how books enable many people to dream and make their dreams come true," Haaland added.
The book is to be linked to a reading competition at schools in the municipality in the coming school year. The prize will be a visit to Oslo's Ullevaal stadium for a match featuring Haaland and the Norway team.
