McGree, who has enjoyed an impressive season with Boro, was man of the match after notching a goal and an assist in Monday night's 2-1 away win over Sheffield United that sent the club top of England's second tier.Â
The top two teams in the Championship, currently Middlesbrough (61 points) and Coventry City (59), receive automatic promotion to the Premier League - though there are still 15 games to go.
McGree's performances will be heartening to Socceroos coach Tony Popovic four months out from Australia's opening World Cup match in Vancouver.
The 27-year-old, who typically plays as an inverted left winger for the Socceroos, is clearly one of Australia's most dangerous and creative weapons when fit.
The South Australian - who has his sights set on reaching the Premier League for the first time - had been in excellent form before a December hamstring injury ruled him out for close to a month.
But he hasn't missed a beat since returning.
McGree's match-winning performance on Tuesday morning (AEDT) followed an assist for the winner against Norwich City the previous game.
Boro took the lead the 19th minute at Bramall Lane when Luke Ayling, Morgan Whittaker and McGree combined well to set up Tommy Conway, who produced a fine finish.
The Australian doubled the lead when Hayden Hackney's shot clattered off the post and McGree was quickest to react, heading the ball into a empty net.
McGree then took off, shushing the home crowd and delivering his trademark 'emu' celebration.
"Probably positions I don't find myself (in) as much as I'd like to - following in shots and getting easier goals," McGree told Middlesbrough's club media.
"So it was good to get one today - with my head as well."
The victory knocked Frank Lampard's Coventry off top spot for the first time since October.
Middlesbrough, who have won six games in a row, were 10 points behind the Sky Blues when manager Kim Hellberg took charge in November.
"It's a credit to players, staff and the fans as well," McGree said.
"Six in row - it's not easy to do but in this league especially. So really proud of everyone."
