Early gains for the local bourse after the weekend's federal election have faded in the afternoon, with the market finishing basically flat.

After being up as many as 50 points in morning trading, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index finished Monday just 3.3 points higher, or 0.05 per cent, to 7,148.9. The broader All Ordinaries rose 7.9 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 7,398.9.
The Australian dollar meanwhile had hit a two-week high against its US counterpart. The Aussie was buying 71.09 US cents, from 70.49 US cents at Friday's close.
