Heavy rain is expected in the region on Wednesday and with river levels already high the Strathallan Family Landcare orgainsers of the event have decided to be cautious.
This have adoted a “wait and see’’ approach, but have indicated there could be a lengthy wait before the event is held.
In the meantime sponsors of the event are encouraging fishers to maintain the goal of removing carp from waterways.
A sharp hook, fat scrub warm and cast close to the bank are the three top tips of carp catching expert Terry Phillips.
Tackle World owner John Brasher was offering his fishing expert as the major resource in the lead up to the carp catch event, but with it being postponed can offer general advice to fishers.
The Carp Catch has a long history of attracting plenty of interest from the community, which share a common goal of removing as many of the oily freshwater fish from the region’s waterways as possible.
Carp are considered a pest because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits which stir up sediments and muddy the water.
They have been the focus of countless control efforts by the government and concerned community groups.
Unfortunately, so widespread and abundant is the carp that it is near impossible to completely eradicate.
All the same, events such as the carp catch are commonplace to tackle this pest and help restore waterways to tip the balance in favour of native fish.
As for Terry’s tips to catch the large bottom feeder, securing scrub worms as bait is the best option — available at the Northern Hwy Tackle World site.
“Use big, fat and juicy scrub worms; cast your line close to the bank (not out in the middle); leave it with some slack on the line in the water and check regularly,’’ he said.
"And remember, be patient.'’
Terry said, unfortunately, there was always good carp catching, which was great fun for kids.
His advice on disposing of the carp, “take them home and put them in your garden,” he said.
He said the carp population would get a lot worse with the current “big wet’’.
"When they had the carp catch at this time of year often the carp have had eggs, which is a good time to get them out of the water to keep the explosion at bay.
“Heavy lines will be best for catching carp, along with a good landing net and a very sharp hook,” he said.
The next big fishing event for the region is the Mulwala Cod Classic, which is on December 3-4.
Prizes for Strathallan Landcare’s Campaspe Carp Catch will include gift vouchers for Tackle World, with several different categories at the event.
