This October the Bakehouse Black Box Theatre is showcasing Steel Magnolias, a comedy-drama centred on a group of women and their enduring friendship throughout the years.
Steel Magnolias is a story of American women and their evolving friendship in north-west Louisiana.
The play’s action is centred mainly on the beauty salon owned by Truvy, who lives in the town of Chinqaupin.
Robert Harling, the American playwright who created the play in 1987, based the story on his own experience dealing with his sister’s death.
This current adaptation is directed by Dale Roberts and is being performed by members of the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group.
“I’m so excited to be working with such talented and enthusiastic production leaders,” Mr Roberts said.
This isn’t the first time the play has been performed in Australia, with Nicole Kidman starring in a 1988 adaptation in Sydney.
The play was turned into a 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Sally Fields.
The cast from STAG are all volunteers and includes a mother and daughter duo.
Stevie Renee (who plays Shelby) and Jackie Skurrie (who plays Truvy) are filling big shoes, playing characters made famous by Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton respectively in the 1989 film.
Ms Renee started acting in Year 10 and was attracted to playing the part of Shelby because the film was a family favourite.
She is able to quote lines from the film with a convincing Deep South American accent.
As for acting next to her mother, Ms Renee said the opportunity was unforgettable.
“It’s been magical ... I feel like our relationship is stronger for it,” Ms Renee said.
