Cobram Lions club secretary Janet Austin said Federation Park, where the market was normally held, was deemed too wet last Wednesday.
“We have a permit to use Federation Park each month for the market and one of the conditions is that if it’s too wet, it’s off,” she said.
“You could hear it squelching under your feet, there were areas that had water over them ... there’s no way we could have had the market on that site.”
However, staff contacted the club and instead of cancelling the market, they agreed to find somewhere else to hold it and eventually decided to use the car park near the library and civic centre.
“It all worked and it all fell into place ... the site holders were happy and the public were happy,” Ms Austin said.
“The shire went out of their way to help ... they worked with us to find an alternative.
“Thank you Moira Shire and your staff.”
Ms Austin said when the market had been held in other locations such as the show grounds, fewer people had come along, as it was less visible to the public.
“It was a trial to see what would happen, but they will be talking to us about (options) for future wet markets,” Ms Austin said.
It is uncertain as to whether the move will be an ongoing arrangement in the case of wet weather.
